Understanding Dharma

Dharma is perhaps the most misunderstood and most essential word in the Indian intellectual tradition. It is neither religion, nor ritual, nor mere righteousness — it is the cosmic principle that holds all of existence in harmony.

Dharma vs. Religion

The confusion of Dharma with religion is one of the great intellectual errors of our times. Religion is an institutional, belief-based framework. Dharma is the universal law that governs all of existence — the scientist, the statesman, the farmer, and the saint alike.

Kabeer Ji Maharaj consistently distinguishes between Dharma as cosmic law (Sanatana Dharma) and religion as organised belief. This distinction is not merely academic — it is the foundation upon which a conscious society must be built.
